Nigeria Soon to Commence Direct Flights to Trinidad and Tobago

Nigerians will soon be able to fly directly to Trinidad and Tobago. Normally, travellers departing from Nigeria to Trinidad and Tobago – one of the world’s favourite tourist spots – would have to make stop overs en route their destination.

This declaration was made recently by Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, who was in Trinidad and Tobago for a two-day State visit and also to attend Emancipation Day celebrations. An air services agreement between both countries has been signed and the president, who met with the Nigerian community in Trinidad and Tobago, assured them that direct flights would soon commence and that his administration would make sure that existing relations between the two countries were strengthened.

The meet the Nigerian community which took place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain saw the president address the issue of the $21,000 bond that the government of Trinidad and Tobago are asking Nigerians to pay as a precondition for obtaining visa to the country. The president stated that issue will be tackled diplomatically between him and host Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

President Jonathan arrived with the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, in Port of Spain late evening on Tuesday July 31, 2012 at Piarco International Airport. He was greeted on arrival by President George Maxwell Richards and his wife, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and almost all of her Cabinet, members of the diplomatic corps, and other officials. His arrival was heralded with a 21-gun mortar salute by the Defence Force guard of honour. He also inspected the guard of honour.
