Nigeria to Import 100 Rice Mills

The Jonathan Administration that successfully oversaw the adoption of 13 new rice mills in Nigeria with a total capacity of 240,000 tonnes in the last year has announced that there will be more rice mills, to meet its 2015 target of self-sufficient rice production. It is known that most of the rice mills in the country are privately owned including the 13 news ones, but the Government has revealed that it will further encourage importation of 100 more large-scale rice mills within 12 – 18 months.

Speaking recently to reveal this, the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwunmi Adesina, disclosed that “These rice mills, not owned by government, owned by a private sector, would put in place the capacity of 2.1 million tonnes.  That means that the rice value chain in Nigeria will for the first time in our nations’ history, make us to have full industrial capacity, be internationally competitive and can export to the rest of West Africa.”
