What The Super Eagles Tell Us About Nigeria

When the Super Eagles play good football, we are one nation. We forget who leads the country or where anyone is from.

It is really sad that the National Orientation Agency is ever aloof as to using this national past time to forge a more perfect union.

For 90 minutes as we played Cameroon this Friday, the woes of flooding in Makurdi, terrorism in Borno, corruption in Abuja and agitations in Eastern Nigeria were staunched by the victory in Uyo.

It is as though Nigeria finds her best self when we are integrative, rather than distributive; when merit rather than ethno-religious considerations guide our national consciousness.

Nigeria’s best team was what united the country. It was as though our footballers were telling all Nigerians to work as a team; to restructure Nigeria into a country where the federating units work for the common goal of making Nigeria great again.

It is often said that all truth is parallel. And if being integrative worked to beat Cameroon on Friday, then, it can work with the way Nigeria is run.

Mikel and his team also told Nigeria to play her first eleven in 2019. Nothing will unite Nigeria like encouraging and supporting competent people to run at the next general elections.
