Maradona: Super Eagles Put A Dent On Argentina’s Kill-Squad Reputation

Football legend, Diego Maradona, has expressed his concern for Argentina’s reputation going into the finals of the World Cup tournament in Russia come June.

The former Argentine top gun, who captained his team to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, which they won. Many players have named the football Hall of Famer as their inspiration while growing up and watching the game.

The Albiceleste are two times champions of the World Cup trophy. They came within an inch of adding another trophy to their World Cup trophy chest, when they made it to the finals of the 2014 World Cup tournament.

The qualifying rounds of the Russia 2018 World Cup competition was not so much of a jolly one for the Argentines as they almost did not make the cut, before Messi made a quick save to qualify the team for the finals in Russia.

The Albiceleste, albeit, played Nigeria in a Messi-less international friendly that left the Argentines running home with their tails between their legs and Maradona is not sure if the reputation of the two-time World Champions is still intact despite being amongst the favourites to claim the 2018 World Cup trophy.

“The problem with Argentina is that we don’t have good defence and midfield. People talk about Lucas Biglia but he is not the best for me. Unfortunately, they are always afraid to say it,” Maradona stated in an interview with diariopopular.com.ar.

“Today, except for Lionel Messi, teams don’t fear Argentina again. Look at the last game against Nigeria, they nearly scored eight goals against us. In my time, you know what happened when we played them.” He added.

He continued; “Jorge Sampaoli is lucky we have Messi in the team because when he is in top form he can cover the mistakes of others.

If he hits top form in Russia, then we have 60 percent of becoming the champion with others complementing his effort”.
