Ever since they released the first Galaxy S device in 2010, Samsung has steadily been serving hot sauce in form of top-notch devices and record-breaking phone designs. The bezel-less display design which they began last year with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ has been, well, copied by a ton of smartphone makers who jumped on the train immediately. This year, we have the 9th iteration of the Galaxy S line of devices. It’s not so much different from the Galaxy S8 design-wise, but Samsung bumped up the specs, moved the fingerprint sensor for easier reach, and upped their camera game by a thousand notches.
The new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship duo were launched at an Unpacked event held in Barcelona, Spain. Both devices retain the familiar glass design of the S8 with water-proofing, aluminum frame, curved Gorilla glasses and Infinity display. The Galaxy S9 has a 5.8″ Quad HD display, while the Galaxy S9+ has a bigger 6.2″ Quad HD unit – just like last year. Both devices are powered by the latest Exynos 9810 chip or the Snapdragon 845 depending on your location, with 4GB of RAM for the S9 and 6GB for the S9+.
The S9 camera is able to record videos at 960 FPS for even slower Slow-Mo video, and just like the iPhone X Animojis, the S9 now has AR Emojis which are 3D characters that are able to imitate your facial expressions using the phone’s camera.
Both devices sport a 12MP camera sensor with a mechanically adjustable variable aperture setup — f/1.4 lens for 28 percent more light in dark conditions and f/2.4 lens for outdoor shooting. Right from the camera app, you can switch between the two apertures with ease. The selfie shooter is an 8MP unit.
Samsung has also successfully fitted an inconspicuous Iris Scanner, and made the fingerprint sensor more reachable. The S9 spots a 3,000 mAh battery, while the S9+ has a 3500mAh battery. Both devices run on Android Oreo with the latest Grace UX.
Samsung Galaxy S9 will cost $720, and S9+ will be available at $840. These phones will be available for pre-order in March and you can expect the shipping to take place from the 16th of March.
