Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday November 19, 2018, commissioned the 23,000 capacity Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
Though the stadium has before played host to several events, the commissioning ceremony marked the official opening of the facility.
A bevy of the Asaba traditional council of chiefs and a large number of spectators availed themselves to the ceremony which epitomized a fresh beginning and significant growth for athletics in the state.
While commissioning the stadium, Obasanjo, acknowledged the vision and drive of governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, towards the state and its people. He went on to commend Gov. Okowa, for raising the ultramodern facility, which is now a big plus for the state.
“We must catch them young, we have the facilities, we have to recruit those who will win, train them from young age. Build a hostel where you will put people that you will train day and night and they will be going to school from the stadium and in whatever sports, Delta State will be the best.”
