Alluring works of art, good music and the perfect scenery brought many art lovers from all around Lagos to Tribe Fest 2018, organized by Executive Initiative (EI).

EI is a philanthropic organization created by a group of young Nigerians committed to the development of their immediate communities as a first step to making a positive impact nationwide.

Tribe Fest 2018, tagged ‘A Celebration Of Unity In Nigeria Through Art’, was staged at the Johnson Jakande Tinubu Park, Ikeja, Lagos, from Friday, November 23, to Saturday, November 24, 2018.

Art Exhibition: A Celebration Of Unity In Nigeria Through Art

Art is never created in a vacuum, there is an idea, life, and experience in every piece of art, and this is what I saw when I walked through the JJT park, musing over the beautiful art pieces on display.

From sculptures and mixed media to portraits and illustrations, each artist had a message or a story to tell.

Chinweuba Jr. Enoch, one of the exhibitors at the event, presented works of art that can be perceived as the appreciation of the African woman in her prime. Inspired by Ntozake Shange’s book, For Colored Girls Who Have Committed Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuf, his piece, also titled For Colored Girls, recognizes the full worth of the African woman.

The progression from pure pencil strokes to pastel color finish mirrors the life of the black woman in the colonial era who was deemed unwanted, ugly and good for only the kitchen and farm work. However, with time she would come to discover that no one has the right to put a price on her worth.

Black is not just the color of her skin, black is who she is and black is perfect, hence the gold finish on Chinweuba’s work.

Other exquisite works at the exhibition were reminiscent of how far we have come as a country and as a people.

Apart from the ornate paintings and sculptures on display, attendees were treated to exciting games, free photo booth pictures, face painting/body art, and live performances from music artists and spoken word poets.

Proceeds from the festival will be added to EI’s donation fund for selected charities.
