Nigerian Stars Dazzle At The Global Citizen Festival

The Global Citizen Festival held on Sunday night, 2nd December 2018 at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa with performances from Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, D’banj and Femi Kuti alongside Jay Z, Beyonce, Usher and Ed Sheeran.

Nigeria’s Starboy, Wizkid, was one of the artists who kicked off the event, performing his legendary hit song ‘Ojuelegba’, as well as ‘Soweto Baby’, ‘Daddy Yo’and his more recent hit single ‘Soco’ to the cheer and utter excitement of the audience. Wizkid also sang with the Soweto Gospel Choir.

The Koko master, Dbanj, mesmerized fans with his animated performance of ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘Emergency’ and ‘Fall in Love’, after being brought on stage by American supermodel, Naomi Campbell.

A bare feet Tiwa Savage and her dancers dazzled in bright multi-colored attires, and had fans jumping and screaming to ‘All Over’, ‘Romantic’, ‘Girlie O’, and ‘Eminado.’

The Nigerian flavor at the event couldn’t be complete without Femi Kuti‘s performance. The scion of the Afrobeat legend performed stirring songs with his Positive Force band.

The event ended with an almost 2-hour performance by Beyonce and JayZ, with Beyonce singing later with Pharell Williams and Ed Sharaan.

The festival which had South African’s Trevor Noah and Bonang Matheba as hosts also featured appearances by celebrities, including Tyler Perry, Gayle King, and a moving speech by Oprah Winfrey.

All four Nigerian representatives at the festival put up stellar performances.

The Global Citizen Festival was founded in 2012 by Ryan Gall and Hugh Evans. The festival which holds annually is put together by Global Poverty Project. Since 2015, Cold Play lead singer Chris Martin has been the festival’s curator and will continue until 2030.

The 2018 edition of the festival held in honor of the late  Nelson Mandela of South Africa, with the aim of arousing social activism towards ending extreme poverty in Africa by 2030. The Sunday night event was the culmination of a yearlong collaboration with the House of Mandela and was inspired by Mandela’s ability to harness various individual strengths towards a common goal.
