GTB Lagos Polo: Day 1 Review

The Guarantee Trust Bank International Polo Championship galloped off yesterday, with players from across the continent and Europe arriving for the 10-day event, taking place at the Lagos Polo Club, Ribadu Road, Ikoyi.

Day 1 featured the Silver Cup, which is customarily the first event of the tournament. Team Lagos Machines and Kaduna Tila Farms both emerged winners from the Silver Cup category.

Machines 8 – 4 Kano Nakudu

The Machines defeated Kano Nakudu 8 – 4, in a keenly contested encounter that saw the Nakudu grab an early lead, thanks to Idris Ahmed.

Olumide Agboola equalized the scores, but his effort was short lived as Useni Mohammed quickly returned Nakudu to the lead.

Minutes later, Abdulmumuni Musa, restored parity to the game, before Glory Mbano added another goal, giving the home team a 3-2 lead at the end of the chukka.

In the second chukka, the Machines brought the game to the Nakudu’s as Agboola, Yinka Alakija, Mbano and Musa all scored, to bring the score to 7 – 2. Agboola got another goal for the Machines to bring the score to 8 – 2. The Nakudu’s made a late comeback with Muhammed scoring twice, however, his effort was only good enough to preserve his team’s ego, as the game ended 8 – 4 in favor of the home team.

Tila Farms 6 – 0 Lagos Lameana

In the second match of the day, Tila Farms did not spare the rod as they thrashed Lagos Lameana 6-0.

Tila Farms dominated the first chukka with Aliyu Tijani, scoring twice, while Hassan Ramadan, scored once.

In the second chukka, Lameana usurped control of the game, but they were unable to make any clean finishes, leaving Tila to extend their lead to 6 – 0, until the final bell.

Day 2 of the championship will feature four Silver Cup games, with Lagos NRT taking on Kano Nicholas Farms, while Rayan face Kano Ibah.

Lameana will face Aragon, while Port Harcourt Koko Farms will do battle with Lagos Machines.

A+Renmoney will take on Kaduna Trapco in the Open Cup category, which is expected to round off Thursday’s fixtures.
