The Nigeria senior women’s football team put up a riveting display of skill and willpower against continental contenders, Cote d’ Ivoire, in the final of the WAFU Cup at the Stade Robert Champroux on Saturday.
The team faced a difficult task against their francophone rivals, which drove the game into a decisive penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at regulation time.
The Falcons defeated the Ivorians 5-4 on penalties to claim the coveted 2019 WAFU Women’s crown. The Nigeria women’s team now have their eyes fixed on the eighth edition of the FIFA Women’s Cup, scheduled to kick off on June 7, and run through July 7 in France.
The Falcons will begin their campaign with a game against Norway on June 8, before they take on South Korea on June 12. In their final group game, Nigeria will do battle with tournament host, France, on June 17.
Speaking on the Falcons’ brave win against Cote d’ Ivoire, Saraki, in a statement taken by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the girls have once again done the nation proud by wining the WAFU cup.
“Your courage, discipline, team spirit and above all, patriotism have brought joy and fulfillment to all football lovers across the country. You have done us proud by remaining a source of inspiration to the younger generation. You have amply demonstrated once again that any worthy goal is achievable if pursued with focus, zeal, commitment and organisation. Your success is our success. Congratulations!
“…[I am hopeful] that the win will spur the female national team, once again, to another dazzling performance during the forthcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup Championship in France.”
