Just a year ago, it could be argued that rap music was dead in
Nigeria. However, this notion has been brought to an end with the rise of some
music acts who gained prominence in 2019. Perhaps we can tag them
“revivalist” for the way they’ve sharpened rap music with their sleek
flows and bars.
A-Q had his big break in 2018 when he released his collabo
album, Crown featuring Loose Kaynon. This album had him serving amazing
performances that couldn’t help but turn heads. Although we haven’t seen
much of A-Q in 2019, his verse alongside rappers like M.I, Loose Kaynon,
and Blaqbonez on the song Martell Cypher gained so much attention that it
became a trending Twitter topic for days. He is expected to releases his album God’s Engineering later this year.
Alongside A-Q, Loose Kaynon delivered superb rap verses on the album, Crown. With a unique tone and impressive way with words, Loose Kaynon has what it takes to dominate the rap scene in Nigeria. In addition to the fact that he is the Chocolate City Vice President and cofounder shows he knows a thing or two about music.
Kapaichumarimarichopaco! No one knows the meaning of that word but it gets the party moving. He did not only invent this term but also unleashed the Zanku dance which has become a major element of Nigeria pop culture. Zlatan is one of the rappers who have promoted the street vibe teaming up with A-list musicians like Burnaboy and Davido to produce party bangers. His impressive bars on “Killing Dem” and “Am I a Yahoo Boy” prove he is one unique breed of a rapper.
Another sensation street rapper in Nigeria, Naira Marley has made 2019 his year when by releasing several hit songs. He also has a loyal fan base called the “The Marlians” which goes to show how much influence he is garnering as a Nigerian rapper.
