The new contract, expected to run until June 2023, has set the release clause of the skillful winger at €100m for the first two years, and €80m from the third year of the deal. With this new deal, speculations making the rounds recently which have seen Chukwueze linked to clubs like FC Barcelona, Liverpool FC, Real Madrid, among others, has been put to an end by Villarreal with this swift move to retain the services of the Nigerian. Chukwueze, 20, has seen his release clause improved thrice since joining the first team, from €25m, to €65m, and now to €100m.
The Nigerian was recently shortlisted among the top 10 players vying for the 2019 Kopa Trophy (a prize for the best U-21 player in the world) and has enjoyed a tremendous rise since breaking into the first team of the Yellow Submarines during the 2018/2019 season. Chukwueze is the first player in the history of Villarreal CF to be nominated for the Kopa Award, which is organized by France Football Magazine. It will be recalled that Chukwueze, in his first season at the top flight (2018/2019), registered a total of ten goals and four assists in 47 matches.
This season, he has scored twice and assisted twice in just eight games. Samuel Chukwueze was also part of the bronze winning Super Eagles team at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, a tournament that saw him command a man-of-the-match performance against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the quarterfinal.
