Saw this movie once and one of the scenes stuck with me. A young single mother from a drug cartel family background fled from her family in Mexico after losing her only brother in a rival gang shootout. She didn’t want her little boy to grow up amidst all the violence. The memory of her beloved brother’s death was too much to bear. She decided to move to the United States to start a new life with her son. She wanted to be happy.
One fateful day while at her job as a hotel cleaner, she got caught up in an assassination operation on one of the hotel guests — a cartel member. She was unlucky to see the face of one of the killers. Being the only person that can link them to the murder, they went after her. She managed to make it out of the hotel alive, but she knew they’d come back for her. Left with no other choice, she had to go back to her family for safety. Back to the place that caused her so much pain and brought her so much unhappiness. She embraced her fate, went back to Mexico and turned things around for herself and her son.
Let’s face reality. No matter how we try to be happy, there are things that will try to destroy that perfect world. It’s part of this thing called life and nobody can avoid it. That’s what makes our existence eventful. The ups and downs, good and bad, highs and lows. Unpleasant things are bound to happen, no matter how fervently you wish for them to stay away.
But guess what, no matter what comes along, you still have a choice — to be happy. One of the most important skills to learn is the ability to always look on the bright side. When you lose a job, be happy about the experience you’ve acquired. When you lose a loved one, be happy you have a chance to preserve whatever legacy they’ve left behind. When you have a flat tyre, be happy you still have a car. And if you lose the car? Heck, you still have legs to walk!
No matter what you’re facing right now, there’s always something to be happy about. There’s always a bright side. The choice is yours to make.
