COVID-19 is now the world’s greatest problem. Not only is it highly misunderstood but it spreads easily, making it hard to control. The WHO and NCDC have gone a long way in preventing the spread of the virus by recommending social distancing, hand washing, and the wearing of facemasks as key measures. But it is up to us as individuals to be proactive in efficiently implementing these measures.
The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, in Owerri, has demonstrated what it means to lead when it comes to taking initiative in curbing the spread of COVID-19. The polytechnic recently introduced its brilliant invention – manual and automated sinks – designed to encourage hygiene among students.

In a video making the rounds on Whatsapp, a representative of the polytechnic explains the process of using these sinks. The manual sinks, according to the representative, have pedals that are used for releasing water, soap, or hand sanitizers. Since these pedals are foot-operated levers, they ensure that people do not touch the sinks with their hands. The sinks also have toilet papers attached to them so that people can clean their hands once they are through with washing them.
This step by Federal Polytechnic Nekede is one that is worth emulating by all institutions in Nigeria. It proves that schools, banks, offices, and other organisations that attract crowds can take active measures in curbing the spread of COVID-19.
