App Of The Week: Chekkit

Counterfeit products have infiltrated the market at an alarming rate nowadays.

Although often hard to tell apart from the original products, counterfeits are of lower quality, but come at cheaper rates. This, unfortunately, makes them an attractive option for consumers who can’t afford the real deal.

The negative impact of counterfeit products cuts across economic activity, tax revenue, investment, and employment worldwide. In a 2017 report by Frontier Economics, Nigeria was listed as one of the countries suffering the effects of counterfeiting.

To solve this problem, Chekkit, a Nigerian mobile platform is leveraging technology to equip businesses in preventing counterfeiting, switching of goods, and pilferage.

What is Chekkit?

Chekkit is a platform powered by existing technologies such as Mobile Authentication Scheme (MAS), artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain, which prevents counterfeiting and helps businesses build credibility through online reviews from customers. The platform enables customers to share their thoughts with people who are interested in these businesses.

Developed at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Accra, Ghana, Chekkit was founded by Dare Odumade (an inventor and UI/UX expert) and Jida Asare (a pharmacist and software developer).

Chekkit provides a secure unique ID for food and beverage products, which enables all supply chain activities to be tracked and traced by manufacturers. This ensures that these products are transferred from the warehouse to the distributors and on to the final consumers, in the absence of any fraudulent activities. With the Chekkit mobile app, users can also use labels to authenticate products.

Other services provided by the app include generation of invoices for businesses and the provision of codes for customers to cast votes for their favourite video in a promotional campaign.
