Crotone of Italy striker, Simeon Nwankwo, has made public his aim of returning to the Super Eagles after being ignored for a long while by coach Gernot Rohr. Nwankwo who boasts one goal in five appearances for the three-time African champions last featured for Nigeria in a bench role during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles on September 2018. An impressive season for the Italian Serie B side saw Nwankwo emerge the league’s top scorer with 20 goals. His 21 goals and three assists in all competitions also meant he ended the season as the Pythagoreans’ highest goal-scorer as they gained promotion into the Italian elite division, Serie A.

Nwankwo,28, made his debut for the Super Eagles in a pre-World Cup friendly against Congo in May 2018 and would go on to make up the World Cup squad, featuring twice from the bench against Croatia and Argentina. The Crotone striker believes he has been ignored by the Eagles technical crew because his club was competing at the lower level but is optimistic that playing at the Serie A will boost his chances of returning to the national team fold.

“When I went down, I knew the risks of losing that spot that I worked so hard to get to although I didn’t play more, which is perfectly understandable…. I understand every situation because the national team of Nigeria is highly rated. So, if you want to be in the national team, you have to be in the big leagues. That I can understand. So now we are back up. I just have to focus, like always, on what I will do here. The only way I will get myself into the national team is about what I do here. This season, I’ve done well. That puts me in a good window to be looked into by the coaches and everybody that makes the decisions. I hope that in the future I will have my chance back again.”
It will be recalled that a move from Gil Vicente in 2016 made Nwankwo a Crotone player. Since he joined the Italian outfits, he has scored 44 league goals in 112 appearances.
