On Friday, July 31, 2020, Italian league giants, SSC Napoli, confirmed that they have signed Super Eagles of Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen, from French Ligue 1 club, Lille OSC. With this fee, Osimhen becomes the most expensive African footballer in history and most expensive Nigerian player in history. The amount paid for Osimhen beats the $94 million (£72 million) Arsenal paid Lille in the summer of 2019 to sign Ivorian winger, Nicolas Pepe. It will be recalled that Lille brought in Osimhen from Sporting Charleroi of Belgium to replace Pepe for a five-year contract worth $14 million last summer.
“SSC Napoli are delighted to announce the signing of Victor Osimhen from Lille on a permanent transfer.”
A few weeks back, Osimhen was linked to Napoli and a number of European clubs such as English league giants, Manchester United and Arsenal. The announcement from Napoli now lays all speculation to rest as regards the movement of the 2019/2020 Best African Player int he French Ligue 1.

An impressive first season in France meant the Super Eagle did not have to spend much time in France before joining one of Europe’s top three leagues, something that must be a delight to Super Eagles chief coach, Gernot Rohr, and the Nigerian football fraternity. A number of accolades also proved the Nigerian was fully out for business as he bagged Lille’s player of the season award alongside being given the 2019/20 Marc-Vivien Foé award for the best African player in Ligue 1. The Nigerian star was also named in the Ligue 1 team of the season.
