Commenting on this development, the ITTF noted that the Men and Women’s World Cup tournament in China will serve as the return of international table tennis events after several months of the corona-induced break from sporting activities around the globe. For Africa, Aruna Quadri and 2020 African Cup champion, Ahmed Saleh of Egypt will be representatives for the Men’s category. While the women’s category will see Africa field one player, Egypt’s Dina Meshref. The ITTF has stated that a total of 20 male and 20 female athletes, inclusive of the World Champion, and players who qualified from their completed continental tournaments (Europe, Africa, and Pan America), as well as players selected based on world ranking from continents such as Asia, and Oceania, will compete at the international showpiece.

Athletes from the globe selected based on the World Cup playing system will equally vie for the trophy. Despite finishing second in the African Cup, Quadri made the list because from the global table tennis rankings, he is the leading African athlete. Aruna who will be participating in his third consecutive ITTF World Cup will be hoping to do better than his feat of becoming the first African table tennis player to reach the quarter-final of the competition after his efforts in 2014 in Dusseldorf, Germany
