After a 75-70pts win against North African side, South Sudan, in their first game, D’Tigers would not have it easy against a stubborn Rwandan side determined to end Nigeria’s dominance in African basketball.

The Nigerian side started slowly after losing the first quarter by 8 points (14-22) to the East Africans who are the host of the 2021 Afrobasket later this year.

Nigeria would go on to reduce the points deficits to just one point late in the second quarter as the Rwandans finished the first half top of the encounter with a 30-31 points lead.

The tie changed in the third quarter as D’Tigers went top with a three-point lead; 44-41 points with interesting displays from Abu Abdul-Malik who was bullish in the paint. An amazing defensive display from Uche Iroegbu backed up by a two-point score saw the West Africans extend their lead to 11 points in the early stages of the fourth quarter (53-42).

From then on, the Nigerians would not relent until the game ended with an amazing 13 points lead (64-51pts).

A total of 13 points saw Keith Omoerah top the points chart for Nigeria while the duo of Ike Iroegbu and Abu Abdul-Malik scored an impressive 9 points each. Ike Nwamu and Chima Moneke were also brilliant in the court alongside the rest of the squad as they scored 8 points each.

The game was not an easy one due to the fact that they played a stretching game on the 17th of February against South Sudan, and today, 18th of February against a physical Rwandan side.

D’Tigers will be playing their next and last game of the 2021 Afrobasket qualifiers tomorrow, the 19th of February, against Mali.
