Since its release on the Christmas Day of 2020 (December 25), Funke Akindele and JJC Skillz’ film ‘’Omo Ghetto (The Saga),’’ has been making the headlines. The movie stars high profile acts such as Tina Mba, Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha, Zubby Micheal, Alex Ekubo, Timini Egbuson, Funke Akindele, amongst others, officially became the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time after ranking as number one for three consecutive weeks.

Stats from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) reveal that the 2020 comedy film grossed (earned) N468,036,300 within just the first three weeks of its release, beating Kemi Adetiba’s 2016 comedy ‘The Wedding Party‘, which previously held the position with N453,000,000.
The Wedding Party 2 which was previously in second place as the highest-earning Nollywood film of all time with N433,197,377, now moves to third place.
A sequel to 2010 trilogy ‘Omo Ghetto’, the new film tells the story of Shalewa’s aka Lefty (played by Funke Akindele) chaotic life. Lefty is confronted with the challenge of living a wealthy and comfortable life which her foster mother presents her or returning to the ghetto life she is accustomed to.

Breaking the four-year record held by Kemi Adetiba’s Wedding Party in just three weeks tells a lot about how high the value of the Nigerian film is growing. Omo Ghetto hit these numbers amidst a pandemic that has crippled the global economy.
It is quite clear that had the year 2020 been bereft of the unwanted visitor, COVID-19, that placed so many restrictions on convergence, Omo Ghetto would have surpassed its current mark by great numbers.
Does this mean the Nigerian government is paying less attention to an industry that can help the country in dealing with an economic crisis that has threatened the wellbeing of her citizens?
It is best for the Federal Government of Nigeria to do away with stiff regulations that threaten the ease of doing business and by extension limiting the chances of citizens gaining employment in the movie industry.
