Wellness: What You Should Know About Blood Pressure 

 

The body requires several metabolic processes to stay healthy. One of these metabolic activities is the transportation of nutrients to the tissues and organs through blood flow in the arteries.

The force that makes it possible for blood to move through the circulatory system is known as blood pressure. Without a healthy level of blood pressure, these nutrients would fail to reach our tissues and organs.

Blood pressure is also responsible for the distribution of white blood cells through the body and the expulsion of toxic waste in our body through the liver and kidneys.

Understanding High And Low Blood Pressure 

Your blood pressure is considered normal when systolic: less than 120 mm Hg diastolic: less than 80 mm Hg, At Risk (prehypertension) when systolic: 120–139 mm Hg diastolic: 80–89 mm Hg, High Blood Pressure (hypertension)when systolic: 140 mm Hg or higher diastolic: 90 mm Hg or higher. High blood pressure indicates that the heart is working too hard to pump blood to the body.

On the other hand, low blood pressure indicates that the heart is not supplying the body with enough oxygenated blood. Low blood pressure does not usually require medical intervention unless you start experiencing symptoms. Your blood pressure is considered low when below systolic: 90 mm Hg and below diastolic: 60 mm Hg.

How To Keep A Healthy Blood Pressure Level

If your blood pressure is within normal levels, then you should be taking steps to prevent it from becoming high or low. Here are some recommendations for maintaining healthy blood pressure:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.
  • Cut down on your sodium intake.
  • Reduce alcohol intake.
  • Alleviate stress and anxiety.
