Named Cowry, the new ATM-size travel card is a travel card that will enable users to pay for their transport within the state. Users who have bought the card for a fee of #400 can swipe it with the card reader machine before boarding BRT buses at bus stops.

According to a source privy to the matter, BRT commuters cannot board a BRT without this card. Basically, the simple process is to register after buying the travel card; then top it up with any amount desired.

Meanwhile, for those who find buying the Cowry card tedious or expensive, there is an alternative that they can explore to still be able to use the card. They can simply search the Cowry app on Playstore and download it. Users who wish to use the Cowry payment without necessarily buying the card can then load the card with whatever amount they want from their bank accounts.

It is only at the point of boarding BRT buses that commuters using the app option can then scan the QR code on the BRT window before boarding. Commuters say this option is as good as using the stored-value contactless card.

After all, in this time of apps and smartphone technology, stored value cards are gradually being phased out especially if it now comes with a cost some people cannot afford. The risk of losing or displacing a loaded Cowry card is also present whereas there is no such thing with the app.
