4 Reasons Why You Should Eat More Potatoes

Potatoes are cheap and popular in Nigeria and they commonly serve as an alternative to yams in many homes. Potatoes are delicious, whatever way you would prefer to cook them and they are easy and quick to prepare. But these are not the only reasons why we love potatoes; it turns out they are loaded with nutrients as well. These nutrients help the body in performing various functions and maintaining your health, some of these are potassium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B6 and phosphorus. If you are still not feeling the need to eat more potatoes than you already do, then here are other important reasons to:

1. They help lower blood pressure: Research has shown that potatoes can help to lower blood pressure as a result of the nutrients it contains. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, potatoes are a good source of potassium which is a mineral that helps lower blood pressure through its actions as a vasodilator (blood vessel widener). Scientists at the Institute for Food Research have discovered that potatoes contain chemicals called kukoamines, which are associated with lowering blood pressure.

2. They are good for brain health: Potatoes contain vitamin B6 which is very important in maintaining neurological health. It also helps create useful brain chemicals, including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. The carbohydrates present in potatoes helps in the maintenance of good levels of glucose in the blood, which necessary for proper brain functioning.  Potatoes also contain a good amount of potassium, thereby encouraging the widening of blood vessels in order to ensure your brain gets enough blood.

3. They aid in digestion: Potatoes contain a high level of fiber which makes them easy to digest and a good choice of food in maintaining the digestive system. They contain electrolytes such as sodium and potassium which helps to maintain a balance in the digestive system and are also important for maintaining optimum body function.

4. They are easy and cheap to prepare: You do not need to be extra rich to enjoy a meal of potatoes. This is the main reason why they are readily available everywhere and they are usually found all year round because they are easy to preserve and do not give in to spoilage organisms very easily, especially when handled properly. Also, more potatoes means less money is being spent on foodstuff while still getting adequate nutrients from delicious and easy meals.
