Arsenal FC of England Nigerian-eligible footballer, Bukayo Saka, has made the cut for the 40 man list of the 2020 Golden Boy award. Saka, 19, is the only player of Nigerian descent to make this year’s list. Stars like Joshua Zirkzee of Bayern Munich and Karim Adeyemi of Red Bull Salzburg failed to make the list after it was trimmed to 40. An award by Turin based Italian newspaper, Italian Sports, the Golden Boy prize is awarded to the best U-21 footballer in Europe.

Won by Athletico Madrid’s Joao Felix in 2019, Saka faces stiff competition in his bid to win the prize as notable stars such as Vinicius of Real Madrid, Mason Greenwood of Manchester United, Barcelona’s Ansu Fati, Bayern Munich’s champions league winner, Alphonso Davies, Borussia Dortmund’s duo of Erling Braut Haaland, and Jadon Sancho, among others, are equally gunning for the prize. A breakout 2019/2020 season saw the teenager contribute in 16 goals for the Gunners as he scored four times and registered 12 assists for the Mikel Arteta managed side, featuring 38 times for the English Premier League giants.

Clinching the prize would make the Hale End Academy product the first player of Nigerian descent to win the award since it was established in 2003. Saka who has been impressive for the English U-21 national team has not made a decision as regards his national team career as the Nigeria Football Federation is working towards persuading him to choose Nigeria over England with the Three Lions keen on ensuring that the Nigerian-eligible star does not consider featuring for his fatherland.
