It is always a big deal to blaze a trail. To be the first in any speciality or field. Such people are special in many ways. One of such is Olurotimi John Badero, a Nigerian-American physician, interventional cardiologist and interventional nephrologist who has been recognized as the world’s first and only fully trained cardio-nephrologist (heart and kidney specialist).

Olurotimi Badero was born in Lagos, Nigeria, the seventh of nine children born to Chief Eliab Olufemi Badero and Stella Taiwo Badero. Olurotimi is a Yoruba name meaning “God stays with me.” His father was a tailor who later became a typist and administrative manager at SCOA motors. His mother worked with Barclays Bank as a secretary in the early 1970s.
Education And Career
Olurotimi John Badero attended St Mary’s Private School in Lagos, and then Federal Government College, Odogbolu for his secondary education. He obtained his medical degree at Obafemi Awolowo University before relocating to the United States.
He completed an Internal Medicine residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, followed by a fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and a three-year fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at SUNY Downstate. He then completed fellowships in invasive & interventional cardiology and in peripheral vascular intervention at the Yale School of Medicine program at Bridgeport, Connecticut and a fellowship in interventional nephrology, endovascular medicine, and dialysis access intervention at SUNY Downstate.
He worked at General Hospital Isolo in Lagos to fulfil his one-year service requirement with the National Youth Service Corps. Afterwards, he relocated to the United States where he completed three years of internal medicine residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
He did his residency at the State University of New York at Downstate Medical centre and got his fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension at Emory University School of Medicine. Badero returned to SUNY Downstate to complete a three-year fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine. Following this, he attended the Yale School of Medicine where he completed a fellowship in invasive & interventional cardiology and another in peripheral vascular intervention. Badero then returned to SUNY Downstate for a year of fellowship training in interventional nephrology and dialysis access intervention.

In all, Dr Badero completed an unprecedented 10 years of continuous post-graduate medical training and he is currently board certified and a consultant in:
- Internal medicine
- Nephrology & Hypertension
- Interventional Nephrology & Endovascular Access
- Cardiovascular Medicine
- Nuclear Cardiology
- Invasive & Interventional Cardiology.
He performed the first trans-radial cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty at CMMC Hospital Mississippi and has authored many peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Badero is the Executive Director, Cardiac Renal & Vascular Associates. He is also the Medical Director of St. Joseph Hospice. He is on the global Advisory Board of the Therapeutics experts on Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis, Merck Pharmaceuticals U.S.A.
He was also named one of Jackson, Mississippi’s Best Surgeons.
Award And Recognition
For his outstanding work and medical contributions, he has been recognized in the US, UK, and Africa including:
- The Association of Black Cardiologists scholarship award for the Best Cardiology Fellow in the U.S.
- The 2014 Mississippi Healthcare Heroes in the state of Mississippi.
- Included in Great Ife Hall of Fame.

Badero has featured in many magazines and articles including Jackson Free Press U.S.A, Financial Nigeria International, My green gene magazine as well as Avantgarde Magazine talking about Cardio-nephrology and emphasizing the interrelationship between cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). He has also appeared on many TV networks and radio interviews including BBC promoting cardiovascular and renal health awareness in the U.S and in developing countries
Dr Badero has authored many peer-reviewed journals and he combines his medical practice with being a church minister and assistant pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Vine Chapel in Mississippi. He is also an entrepreneur, educator and motivational speaker.
