Top 10 Music Videos of 2019

Now that 2019 is almost over and we’re stepping into a new decade, we can start promoting music and movies for quality content rather than aimless entertainment. This list is a collection of some of the most original and imaginative music videos released in 2019. Certainly not exhaustive.

Rudeboy – Reason With Me

Don’t miss that one hilarious scene where Rudeboy puts his hands together in front of his face and begs. The song is essentially a plea, Rudeboy is begging his woman not to leave him. She leaves anyway, and he falls in love with a woman that’s able to ride out the difficult times with him. The video is funny and touching, but best of all; it has a message.

Fireboy DML – King

Fireboy is sitting in a massive warehouse. There’s a runway set up, and a few girls are giving him a private fashion show. One minute, the girls are calmly walking around him, next thing you know its pouring rain. The video was ‘shot and chopped’ by TG Omori, and it’s unusual developments like this (combined with the eccentric set up of his scenes) that make the videos he directs so original. In the lyrics of King, Joeboy is claiming he can’t beg for love, but on screen, we’re watching him sing his heart out to his girl under pouring rain. The visuals give a perspective to the song that we may not have caught from just listening. It may be safe to assume that even though Fireboy won’t beg outright, some deep feelings will be hurt if the girl he wants doesn’t treat him like the king he says he is.

Joeboy – Beginning

A video brilliantly directed and brought to life by London based videographer, Mollana Burke. It was difficult to choose between this one and Baby, another of Joeboy’s biggest hits this year. But there’s just something about the video for Beginning that keeps you glued to the screen. Maybe it’s the song itself: those irresistible lyrics, the lush, bubbly beat. Or, perhaps, it’s the beautiful girl, her killer moves, and the adorable way Joeboy laughs and smiles as they dance together. The colour tones in this video are earthy and vibrant – yellows, greens, reds and oranges all mesmerize and blend together until you realize that you are beginning to begin to fall in love.

Tems – Try Me

A dark and mysterious video. It starts with the singer in captivity and ends with her holding a torch to the sky. You can’t try Tems. Deeply haunting, this is not a music video you’re likely to forget about in a hurry. Directed by the very talented Ademola Falomo.

Nobody Fine Pass You – T Classic

This hit song gives you context with its video. The storyline is worth paying attention to, and the end might just make you cry.

Rema – Dumebi

Rema is a dream to watch on camera, he brings all the ease and energy of his youth on-screen with him. But what really gives the Dumebi video its appeal is the story that it tells. Rema and his friends are a couple of care-free kids on a road trip, and Rema is recording. There’s a problem though, the girl Rema likes doesn’t seem interested in him. We watch him try to shrug it off, he walks off on his own to daydream. Then we’re suddenly transported into the purple place in his heart where it’s just him, her and butterflies. With winding roads, lush greens, fairy lights, marshmallows and a campfire, Ademola Falomo crafts a gorgeous teenage crush story.

Billionaire – Teni

Another intricate video by TG Omori, this one features a TV game show where Teni wins the billions she’s pining for. There’s nothing dull or boring about the way Omori put this one together.

Fireboy DML – Scatter

Another recent release I couldn’t resist putting on the list. We all need to watch out for Fireboy, he’s changing things. The Joker inspired video is set in an apocalyptic world. Brace yourself, this one might scare you.

Chidinma x Flavour – Mma Mma

A recent release that shows off fun preparations for a traditional wedding between the two singers. The video flatters Igbo culture generously, from the meeting of the elders to the elaborate traditional dress and décor.

Joeboy ft Mayorkun – Don’t Call Me Back

Loved this one mostly for that one responsible scene where Mayorkun blindfolds Joeboy’s girl and sends her home in a taxi. I hope you enjoyed watching the videos on this list.
