Websites We Like: OLX

OLX is a free classified advertising online portal. Founded in 2006 by Fabrice Grinda and Alec Oxenford, OLX became the largest online advertising portal in many countries including Nigeria. In 2010, OLX was acquired by Naspers, the South African group that owns major brands including DStv, SuperSport and Mnet. Currently, the company has its head office in Amsterdam.

OLX, an abbreviation for OnLine eXchange, is a global brand, featuring 123 million unique users across 107 countries with generated traffic flow of over 1.8 billion page views monthly and not less than 14 million downloads of its app.

In Nigeria, just as it is with every other country where OLX operates, one can buy, sell or exchange used goods and services by posting a free ad on the website. Virtually everything can be sold or bought via this platform, from vehicles to clothing, animals to real estate and electronics to even jobs. Items people thought to have been of no value have been sold via this platform.

For three years now, OLX has received positive responses from Nigerians. Through excellent customer service and brand development, the platform is Nigeria’s number one in e-commerce. Their team consists of both full-time and contract staff, all of whom are Nigerians.

Playing a major role in online entrepreneurship, OLX set the pace in Nigeria, empowering young business starters by giving them a supportive platform where their products can be advertised and sold for free. There are no rents or taxes to be paid. In addition, security is being confirmed by registering both parties before transactions take place.

Today’s success story of OLX is largely linked to the Country Manager, Lola Masha. She is an international expert in business and technology. Prior to her current position at the company, she has worked with Google, Bank PHB Plc and McKinsey.

Come 27 February 2016, Lola would be one of the speakers at this year’s Business Fair, an e-commerce seminar and exhibition annually hosted by Connect Nigeria.
